Hi, I'm new here, having just discovered Kim's books. I'm reading The Resurrectionists right now, and I love it! I know this is an old thread, but I decided to answer it in hopes of helping someone and maybe venting a bit in the process. It is possible to get published! BUT...you must be very careful who you publish with. To make a long story short, I went thru two agents and Authorlink before finding a small-press publisher for my first novel. The final publication of my novel was a dramatically different kettle o' fish than I expected. The publisher demanded that I trash up a good, painstakingly researched historical mystery with graphic love and rape scenes because she wanted to publish the book as romantic suspense. As a result, I'm almost ashamed to promote the book because I live in a small, religion-oriented town in Georgia, USA. Please don't hate me...I'm definitely NOT a fan of the current president! I'm a die-hard Democrat, in fact. I'm not a fan of organized religion either. My interests lie with alternative religions, but I teach upper-level grades in this area, so I have to make a half-hearted effort to keep my "strangeness" hidden. Be that as it may, let me get back to the original topic. My advice -- and the plan for my second novel is -- find a good agent and publish thru the agent! But make sure the agent is reputable...there are as many crooked agents out there as there are crooked publishers. Beware of agents who ask for "reading fees" or other cash up front. Good agents, I hear, are NOT supposed to do that. A good agent can not only find the right publisher for you, but s/he can also make sure you get your fair share of the royalties from your work -- something I've missed out on. I've collected virtually nothing from the company that published my novel although it was sold on Amazon and thru the company's website. And I have no way of claiming my share of the royalties unless I hire a lawyer and go thru maximum stress, which I just can't deal with at the moment. And get this -- although I severed ties with said publisher some time ago, I suspect she's still selling my book and keeping the profits herself. I did have two agents -- one was a crook, and one was a very good, aggressive agent, who unfortunately had to close her agency because she got lupus. I found the publisher I've been mentioning thru Authorlink which, even though I had bad luck with the publisher they recommended, is a very reputable site. So, my final advice is...finish your novel and find an agent, whether thru www.authorlink.com or another source. Make sure the agent is reputable -- if s/he is a member of professional organizations, that will help ensure credibility. Cooperate with the agent, keep your fingers crossed, and stay in close communication with your chosen pantheon of gods. (Hope I spelt "pantheon" right.) Lovely to be here, Jan
